Watercolor brushes - Use and Care Instructions
Using a high-quality watercolor brush can greatly enhance the quality of your artwork. Here are some instructions for using and caring for your Polina Bright watercolor brushes:
During Use
-
Wet your brush before use:
Always wet your brush before dipping it into watercolor paint. This prevents paint from sticking to dry bristles and allows for smoother application. -
Use the right brush for the job:
Different brush shapes and sizes are designed for different techniques. Explore to find what works best for your style. -
Clean your brush between colors:
Rinse your brush thoroughly with clean water between color changes, and gently blot it on a paper towel to remove excess moisture. -
Never leave brushes in water during painting:
Do not leave your brush sitting in water while painting, even for short periods. Prolonged water exposure causes the wooden handle to swell and crack, and damages the bristles and ferrule. Always rinse, then lay flat or rest the brush on the edge of a container if you need to set it down.
After Use
-
Rinse and reshape:
After each session, rinse your brushes thoroughly in clean water and gently reshape the bristles with your fingers. -
Dry properly:
Never store your brushes while they’re still wet. Lay them flat on a towel or hang them upside down to dry completely. This prevents water from seeping into the ferrule, which can loosen the glue and damage the brush over time. -
Store safely:
Once completely dry, store brushes upright in a container with bristles facing up, or horizontally in a brush holder. This helps preserve the natural shape of the bristles.
Long-Term Care
-
Avoid harsh chemicals:
Never use solvents, ammonia, or other harsh cleaning agents on your brushes. They can weaken the bristles and destroy the adhesive holding the brush together. -
Clean with mild soap:
Regularly clean your brushes with mild soap and warm (not hot) water to prevent buildup and extend their lifespan. -
Handle gently:
Avoid pressing hard or scrubbing with your brush. Excess pressure can bend or split the bristles and compromise performance. -
Replace when worn:
Even high-quality brushes wear down over time. If your brush loses its shape or the bristles begin to fray, it may be time for a replacement.
By following these instructions for use and care, you can help to ensure that your Polina Bright watercolor brushes stay in good condition and provide you with beautiful results for years to come.
